Prevention and Management of Diabetes 2
Majority of patients with diabetes suffer from type 2 diabetes. In the United States, 90% of all diabetics suffer from diabetes 2. Symptoms are frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger and fatigue. Genetics and lifestyle are the two major causes of this type of diabetes. Since we cannot do much about genetics, the usual form of management is through lifestyle intervention.
There is a stronger inheritance pattern for type 2 diabetes but onset may be delayed or prevented with proper nutrition and exercise. Exercise, specially aerobics and resistance exercises are beneficial. A diet that promotes weight loss is also important. In more advanced cases, medication is available. Oral medication is the usual first line treatment followed by insulin injections when needed.
Lifestyle Choices
Diabetes is a disease that affects the amount of insulin that is being produced by the body. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. This hormone allows sugar to enter cells in the body. The sugar is used as energy, or stored in fat, liver, or muscle cells for later use. Without insulin, the body cannot convert sugar or other carbohydrates into the energy it needs to function. There are many causes of diabetes, some of which cannot be helped.
When most people think of diabetes, they are often thinking about the Type II. There are many things that can cause Type II diabetes, many of which are the result of poor lifestyle choices. Obesity, especially if much of the extra weight is located around the abdomen, can often lead to diabetes. A diet that is lacking in nutrition, especially protein and fiber, can also lead to diabetes. Eating too much refined products, such as white bread, and a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to diabetes as well.
